IIRR Seedportal

Seed is the most important basic critical input required for Rice Production. The responses of all other inputs depend on quality seeds to a large extent. Hence the use of high quality seeds of improved varieties or hybrids is vital and indispensable.

An effective and sustainable means of increasing production is through the cultivation of improved seed varieties. The use of high-yielding, climate-resilient, disease-resistant, nutrient-rich, adaptable and high-quality improved seeds will make it possible to produce more food profitably without expanding farmland.

Many improved varieties have been developed by the Indian Institute of Rice Research for rice cultivation suiting the need of the farmers. Information on improved varieties covering the duration, traits addressing and seed availability is one of the crucial components for bridging the gap between technology development and its adoption.  IIRR Seed Portal has been developed as a new digital initiative from ICAR-IIRR to facilitate seed procurement online and provide information on improved varieties and seed availability. This portal was successfully launched in December 2021 and hosted at https://IIRR-seedportal.in .

The portal was developed using WordPress, a Content Management Software(CMS). One Time Password (OTP) verification plugin was integrated with the Seed Portal registration form. The wooCommerce plugin was used for the integration of SBI Payment Gateway for online procurement.  The procurement screens are similar on Amazon/Flipkart cart pages. This portal is very user friendly with simple navigation to menu items.

It is mandatory that the user/farmer has to register with the portal to procure seeds online. Users/Farmers can easily select the varieties by choosing the traits and duration and placing orders for quality seed of rice crop.

Further dashboards can be developed to visualise location wise seed sales and demand

IIRR Geoportal

Rice is the major crop in India and it is grown in different climatic zones. As agriculture is mainly based on spatial domain, use of geospatial technologies in agriculture has a big role in achieving the target production. IIRR manages a huge experimental database under All India Coordinated Rice Research Program. ICAR-IIRR has been applying geospatial technologies to improve rice production since 2000. With this background,

IIRR Geo-Portal (http://www.iirr-geoportal.in) has been developed to visualize spatial layers developed at IIRR on the real world coordinates. Open source technologies such as GeoServer, GeoExt, ExtJS , HTML, CSS and QGIS were used for the development of this Geo-Portal.  This portal visualises the following geo referenced layers of rice crop created at IIRR.

AICRIP funded Centers

  • Agro Climatic Zones- 15 (Planning Commission).
  • District level Rice Area and Yield (2005, 2010, 2015)
  • Rice based Cropping Systems- Rice- Rice and Rice Wheat
  • Soil Quality Index- Nalgonda district, Telangana
  • Rice yield estimated from Spatial Rice DSS- Miryalaguda Mandal, Nalgonda Dt, Telangana
  • Vulnerable temperature Zones  forecasted  for  Kharif season
  • Suitable Areas for Hybrid Seed Production- Favourable weeks during flowering  - Kharif and Rabi seasons
  • Important Diseases of Rice crop- Distribution and Severity (10 diseases).

This portal is very useful for researchers and planners for analyzing the rice productivity scenario over decades at the district level overlaying with different parameter layers influencing rice production. This portal will be further upgraded with spatial query modules to extract the interesting area of interest and interoperability services across ICAR institutes with REST APIs. This portal can be easily customized to any other institutes to publish GIS layers.

AICPRP

All India Coordinated Rice Improvement Programme (AICRIP) is the largest research network across India on a single crop. There are more than 100 coordinating centers under this programme. The main objective of the AICRIP is to evaluate technologies developed on rice crop across diverse ecosystems to increase and stabilise rice production. Every year numerous cultivars and improved elite breeding lines, crop production and protection technologies are evaluated across the country to select the best performing variety/technology. There was no real time reporting, data submission before the development of portal but data were sent only once that too in very diverse formats thus resulting in delays in analysis and reporting. Hence a need was felt for effective data collection, analysis and real time reporting.

Keeping in view of the above mentioned points, AICRIP Experimental database portal has been developed to receive experimental data uniformly across disciplines across centers.

Different entities and activities under AICRIP system  were analysed, relational tables and user interfaces were created using Microsoft Visual C Sharp as Front end and MS SQL as back end. AICRIP Intranet package was designed with 57 relational tables, 190 stored procedures and 60 user interfaces. User friendly interfaces were designed for data entry and analysis of Random Block, Split designs for evaluating breeding lines, crop production and protection technologies, Screening Genotypes for assessing genotypes reaction to pests and diseases.

This portal is accessible to only AICRIP users with user credentials. Five important user privileges. were designed to access data in AICRIP Intranet.

End Product of this project will reduce the work and time taking for analysing huge data from AICRIP centers. Data will be directly added to the centralized database in the prescribed format and year wise data will be maintained on the server. State- zonal varietal performance and location wise treatment means along with CD, CV, significance values, location wise scores in screening nurseries reports are the major reports in Intranet. This will be further extended for generating location wise performance of technologies across trials, disciplines and centers. This huge database will be of great use for developing intelligence technologies to different rice growing regions. This software can be easily customized and used for managing and coordinating data of any other crops under Indian Council of Agricultural Research(ICAR).
