Objectives

  • Development of crop genotypes with zinc, protein, β-carotene, iron, low phytate, and folic acid through conventional and genetic engineering and their evaluation.
  • Study of bioavailability and biosafety of developed crop genotypes.
  • Gene identification, allele mining and functional genomics for the candidate genes associated with enhanced micronutrient and protein content and reduced phytate content through Next Generation Technologies.
  • Socio-Impact studies for assessment of consumer knowledge, preference and preparedness for biofortified products and sensitization and popularization of biofortified products.

Varieties released

 
DRR Dhan 45 (IET 23832: RP 5886-HP 3-IR80463-B39-3), developed by IIRR, Hyderabad using the donor of HarvestPlus, is released for the states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. It is a mid-early duration variety with 22 ppm zinc and 3.85ppm Fe. CR Dhan 310 (IET24780: CR2829-PLN-37) developed by NRRI, Cuttack and released by CVRC for Odisha, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh as the first high protein (10.2%) high yielding (4.5 t/ha) rice variety of India. Mukul (IET 24772: CR2829-PLN-100) has been released by SVRC for Odisha as nutrient rich rice with high protein (10.1%) and moderately high Zn content (20 ppm).

variety identified: R-RHZ-LI-23 (IET 25477) - Zinco Rice- MS developed by IGKV and identified by VIC 2018 for West Bengal, Chattisgarh and Odisha. 

Common study across the partners: A set of 36 donors for high zinc from IIRR, NRRI, IARI, IGKV and TNAU were pooled and grown at five locations during kharif 2017. The donors were characterized for their agro-morphological characters, iron and zinc in brown and polished rice across locations and stable donors were identified.

Entries under evaluation: ~20 biofortified entries are being nominated and evaluated in under AICRP-Rice (The project has been started from 2014. Thus, some of the base material was from DBT, HarvestPlus and from other projects. However being evaluated, improved and multiplied in this project.
